This is Gallery-3 of a European Road Trip taken in June and July 1966. It takes place in Switzerland beginning in Interlachen and ending in Zermatt. It includes a Jungfrau-Tour into the heart of a mountain (where there is an ice village), drives through beautiful mountain passes, and a hike that takes us over 11,000 feet at the base of the Matterhorn.

Being familiar with the white mountains in NH it had always been difficult to imagine mountains over 6,000 ft (like Mt Washington). I expected to be impressed with the mountains in Switzerland but had no idea that the reality would exceed my expectations. I only wonder what pictures I could have taken had I had the kind of photographic equipment I have today.

It was great to encounter local people as well as tourists from all over the world. It was fun to watch two men slide down an almost vertical slope in their business suits and shoes.

We also took note of the differences between the cows in the US versus the ones we met roaming freely on the mountain. These cows looked like they were on steroids...very muscular.

On our hikes we encountered serious hikers with all the equipment and tourists dressed more for city life than mountain climbing.

Also notable were several restaurants encountered along the trail in Zermatt. They looked like 5 star restaurants you would expect to see in Paris.
