Gallery #7 of our 2019 Road Trip is 1 of 2 galleries of Glacier National Park. Glacier National Park, MT and Waterton Lakes National Park of AB Canada are collectively the world's first International Peace Park.

Our trip began at West Glacier Village where we entered the park at no cost.(see the picture of our Golden Age Passport. The Golden Age Passport is no longer available to Seniors. I was one of the lucky ones who obtained it before it was discontinued. For 12 years I have been able to enter national parks at no cost even with a full car.)

We followed the Going to the Sun Road for 30 miles to Logan Pass. This road is among the most spectacular in the world. It is a very narrow two-way road with a mountain on one side and cliffs on the other. It is surrounded by glaciers and subject to snow and rock slides. Beautiful vistas are around every corner and binoculars unveil Big Horn Sheep and Mountain Goats along the way.

One of the highlights of our trip were blooms of Beargrass, one of Glacier National Park's iconic wildflowers. Beargrass, usually looks like grass until it blooms (once every 7 years). When it blooms it sends up a long stem with grass like wiry leaves that get progressively shorter. At the top of the 3-5 foot stem is a dense cluster of small white flowers in a conical shape. We were lucky in that the blooms are often over by the end of June, but on occasion in higher altitudes they may continue through July. We definitely hit the jackpot.

After 30 miles of driving we arrived at Logan Pass, the highest point on the road. There we parked and went on a 4.5 mile hike up to Hidden Lake (see Gallery #8). At the parking lot we noticed several Big Horn Sheep on the mountain across the road. Over the next few minutes some of them crossed the road and entered the parking lot, running between the cars to the other side. It was a great start to the biggest adventure of the trip (see the next gallery, Road Trip #8).
