Gallery #10 of our 2019 Road Trip is one of two covering Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone was established as the country's 1st National Park in 1872. It is a 3,500 sq. mile wilderness that sits on top of a volcanic hot spot. Located mostly in Wyoming, it spreads into parts of Montana and Idaho. Yellowstone features lush forests, canyons, rivers, hot springs and gushing geysers and is home to hundreds of animal species including bears, wolves, bison, elk and antelope.

Because of its size and diversity we decided to spend the first day exploring the north country which is known for its wildlife and beautiful scenery.

The day began in Nevada City, west of Ellis. We woke, walked the dog and hit the road to West Yellowstone. Along the way we followed the Madison River where there was extensive Fly Fishing and a stop where we met Barry and friend/wife? who were involved in the Cycle of Hope a fundraiser of Habitat for Humanity.

From there we passed by Quake Lake, the site of an earthquake that killed 28 people on Apr 17, 1959 and continued to the town of West Yellowstone where we had lunch and secured a room at the Pioneer Hotel.

From there we entered Yellowstone Park where
we encountered beautiful mountains, rivers, canyons, and wildlife. We saw Pronghorn Antelope, Bison, Bear, and Elk. We hoped to see a wolf family at Clough Creek but had an up close and personal experience with a lone Pronghorn instead. At dusk we encountered a group of cowboys and their pack mules who were returning from an extended trip.

Near dusk on the return to West Yellowstone we saw several more Bison and Elk herds illuminated by a beautiful sunset.
