This gallery is of a hike to the top of Mt. Katahdin, second highest mountain in New England and the northern terminus of the 2,020 mile Appalachian Trail. It is 5,267 ft high, just 13 feet shy of a mile. To me it is the premier mountain in the east. It is located in Baxter State Park in the northern wilderness of Maine. The treat for me is the view from the top. It includes all the lakes, rivers and streams I used to canoe in the Allagash wilderness: Chesuncook Lake, Telos Lake, Chamberlain Lake, Allagash Lake and stream, Eagle Lake, and Churchill Lake which leads into the beginning of the Allagash River (see other galleries).
Our hike took us to up to Chimney Pond where we spent the night. The next morning we set out with a light load and climbed pretty much straight up the chimney, a tall pile of large rocks which lead to the top. There, at the highest point, is a sign which marks the end of the Appalachian Trail.
