The Grand Canyon is the only destination that coincides with our 2015 Road Trip. My experience is that every visit is unique because of its spectacular vastness and changing appearance as the day and seasons change ... not to mention the weather. This year, as last year, we started at the Visitor Center but then went west instead of east. Our first major stop was the Bright Angel Trail which is a winding trail that takes you to the Colorado River (7.8 miles) and then to the Phantom Ranch for a total of 9.6 miles. In 1965 I hiked this trail as a young man with a 60 pound pack and only a quart of water. I was lucky to survive. This year we only descended about 1/2 mile but it sure brought back memories of the dust, heat and vastness -- not to mention the stench at certain points where mules stop and relieve themselves. After returning to the top we experienced several weather changes. The most dramatic was when a thunderstorm moved in with high winds and hail. It was so dramatic that guests were forced to evacuate by bus. (see bus photos and the videos at the end). The day ended with a spectacular sunset that the camera could only begin to capture.
