After leaving Acadia North (see gallery) we drove further north and east to Greenville, ME located on the south most shore of Moosehead Lake. Moosehead is the second largest lake in New England (2nd to Lake Winnepasaukee) but far different in feel. It is the entrance way to the Allagash Wilderness and holds many great memories for me. I used to guide parties through the Allagash Wilderness and Greenville was the jumping off post for those trips. On this occasion we drove around the western shore spending the night at Moose Mountain Inn, stopping at the ferry port for Mt Kimeo, and having lunch at the Birches (a beautiful fishing and hunting lodge accessed by a lengthly dirt road north west of Moosehead Lake). This kind of country is beautiful and rare. Everyone from the city should go here at least once. On the other hand, that would defeat the purpose, wouldn't it?
