A most memorable day. While approaching Jackson Hole, we encountered several forest fires that had been burning for over a week. The smell of smoke was intense and the smoke sometimes surrounded us. We were able to see some of the firefighting world up close and personal. Huey Helicopters carrying tanks of water, firetrucks and firefighters along with the people who support them with ambulances, food and equipment.
Next we entering Jackson Hole with its diverse environment of tony shopping and old style Western Gunfights (re-enacted in the center of town).
We then went to the Jackson Hole Playhouse to see the excellent musical, "The Ballad of Cat Balloo "(see videos at the end).
After the musical we could find no motel or camping area that was not full. This led to another great adventure.
We pulled off the road in the Teton National Forest and slept in the car. We woke up to the heavy smell of smoke and the sound of an approaching Buffalo Herd that was grazing its way to our car in the pre-dawn light.
When we turned around we saw the exact view I had seen in a photo Exhibit in Orleans, MA--one I hoped to capture with my camera--a beautiful barn sitting in a meadow in front of the Grand Teton Mountains.
When the sun rose it was like magic and a little eerie. What appears to be fog in the pictures, is really smoke from forest fires.
