This is the first of eight galleries of our 1966 Road Trip around Europe. We began in Amsterdam after picking up a VW Fastback which we purchased through an overseas delivery program. Our plan was to see as much as we could in 6 weeks keeping the cost down by camping as much as possible. We also wanted to travel more like Europeans than typical American tourists. This enabled us to meet a broader cross section of people and to document things not normally encountered by tourists. Our trip began in the Netherlands and continued through Belgium, France, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Yugoslavia (split up in 1991-1992), Austria, Germany, England and Scotland.
This gallery begins as we land in Amsterdam where we stayed in a modest hotel and explored the canals, a flower market and side streets. The gallery continues through Belgium and ends at the Palace of Versaille in France where Gallery 2 begins.
